Pioneer Woman’s Onion Straws

This recipe is from The Pioneer Woman. They are DELICIOUS and I always double the recipe…of course I have 3 hungry boys!

Ingredients:

  • 1 Large Onion
  • 2 cups Buttermilk
  • 2 cups Flour
  • 1 TablespoonSalt
  • ¼ teaspoons (to 1/2 Teaspoon) Cayenne Pepper
  • 1 quart (to 2 Quarts) Oil (I use Olive Oil)
  • Black Pepper To Taste

Directions:

Slice onion very thin, this is an important step.

Place in a baking dish and cover with buttermilk and soak for at least an hour.

Combine dry ingredients and set aside.

Heat oil to 375 degrees.

Grab a handful of onions, throw into the flour mixture, tap to shake off excess, and PLUNGE into hot oil. Fry for a few minutes and remove as soon as golden brown.

Repeat until onions are gone.

I cannot make these fast enough…my family is eating them while I’m making them.

We made these the other day and they were sooooo good. We made a full batch for two of us and I have to say we ate them all and I totally would have eaten more if I had them. If you like onion rings, these are to die for. Similar to ted’s hotdogs. Delish!
